Shark Teeth

Shark Teeth...

I guess I’m suffering from a vacation hangover. As I drove to work this morning, I shouted “punchbug” with no kids to echo the VW sighting. Sitting at my desk, images of the long days on the beach are flashing on my monitor. In honor of the R&R, I had a vacation observation that I thought I would post for you. People do all types of things on the beach: they play corn hole, ladder ball, paddle ball, frisbee, swim, surf, sing, and sleep. Some curious folks spend hours combing the sand with metal detectors to turn up a few buried treasures. Still others...

Working Without Vision…...

Working without vision can leave you with a jacked up crapper and a pissed off wife. Trust me on this one. About a year ago, I set out with a crowbar, a sledgehammer, and an idea. What a nasty recipe. I knocked out some sheet rock, removed a few studs, and created a fine mess. The next weekend I walked into the bathroom and fiddled with a few things, but I knew and the bathroom knew that I didn’t have the vision to complete the project. Worked piled up and the thought of the bathroom slipped out of my mind. I had torn the walls out of the bathroom and erected walls...

Foursquaranoid....

I am paranoid. I can say it with clarity and without guilt or shame, but turning through the pages of You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto by Jaron Lanier forces me to be down right skeptical. I hope a bit more mature as a technologist. So, with this preface, I approach what is being dubbed as The Next Twitter, Foursquare. photo by @zerok The basic premise to the game/network is to opt-in by registering your mobile device and adding friends by mining your networks Twitter, Facebook, Address Books, etc. Then, when you’re on the go, you broadcast your location for...

Let it Snow...

Something happens to me when the 5 day forecast suggests the possibility of snow, a little boy springs up with excitement and a little hope. As the promise of the white draws closer, the childlike anticipation manifests into something that is seldom experienced as an adult–snow day. Image used under creative commons license by skycaptaintwo Of course, I live in the south, so the soft white snow doesn’t stick around long enough to turn into the road-muck, black of northern towns. The winter storm rolls through and softens the sharp angular edges of our world...

Coaching: Understanding Perfect “i...

I was thinking about Pat Head Summit, the ladies basketball coach for University of Tennessee, this afternoon and how her goal of the team is perfect execution of the plays. And you’re welcome for stating the obvious, but this really sank in today in a very different way than ever before. I view coaches as motivators, recruiters, promoters, but I have never really thought of them as visionaries of perfect execution. In this sense, the coach may think “if only…player A runs down the left side of the court and player B dribbles to the defender and player C...

Jeremy Floyd on Hallerin Hilton Hill...

In case you missed it, Hallerin Hilton Hill had me on the show to talk about Twitter. The experience was a lot of fun, but I think he may have exaggerated the magnitude of my abilities–just a little. Hallerin even endorsed @jfloyd for the East Tennessee’s Best Tweeter award. For your convenience, you can vote for East Tennessee’s Best Tweeter here. Share the...

Planting Vision...

For the past four weeks I have spent Weekends working long hours in the yard. After, as the wife says, neglecting the yard for several years, I am interested and excited in transforming dirt into something beautiful. While laboring away under the hot sun with the assistance of a few fine friends (kids aged 7 and 2), I have reflected on the fun torture that was working with my dad in the yard when I was young. In particular, I remember one event where my dad had created a raised bed in front of their house. My job was to create a “custom” edging around the...

Think...

I find myself living in yesterday’s thought sometimes. With 2800 tweets to read, 145 unanswered emails, 2 blog posts to write, 4 powerpoint decks to craft, a dog that needs to go outside, a car that needs an oil change, an economy that is flatly in the crapper, I think about all that I have to think about rather than the time to genuinely think. Great writers and comedians explore the nuance of mundane life. Seth Godin can observe a Cranium game placed in Starbucks and Seinfeld can exaggerate the pain of saving seats for others in movie theaters. They came to these...

Happy Hollow-days...

Most of my commentary here is generally divided into two categories: sassy commentary and technology/marketing posts. This post, however, fits neither, so save yourself now if you came here to find those! As I drove home from our weekly family gathering the other night, I gazed off into the ornamental decor and noticed this one beautiful grouping of three trees that were perfectly cone shaped. I am sure that you have seen these decorations. lights fill thin bands of plastic, so that when you erect the decoration it appears as a tree although it is nothing more than twenty...
